Interviews make everyone nervous and unfortunately many of the most irritating mannerisms are those into which we retreat when under pressure. Talking too much and avoiding people,s eyes are just two of them. Others are mumbling, excessive fidgeting, slumping into the chair, giving mono-syllabus answers like Yes/No, giggling, using too many hand gestures, chewing gum or biting nails.

It is impossible to remember and keep track of all your gestures, but you should be careful to avoid the following:

  • Lolling back in your chair in an over-relaxed way, possible with your hands behind your head. This far too over-confident for the situations and will cause a very bad reaction.
  • Getting too close to the interviewer. This invades his/her territory and makes the interviewer feel threatened. This also shows that you are too excited and cannot keep a check over yourself.
  • Putting your hand in your pockets. Depending on the way you do in this can look insolent aggressive of defensive.
  • Crossing your arm tightly, in front of you. This is a very defensive position and will prevent a relaxed atmosphere from being established.
